The Art contest @ MCM Midlands Expo was judged by members of Inspired comics and Willie Hewes of Itch publishing. We were impressed with many of the entries, and it was hard to pick just four winners. For each category, we also picked a runner up, a piece of art we felt deserved special mention.
PRE-MADE:
Under 16:
WINNER – Dan Hadley for his very busy ballpoint drawing of a cool character looking out over a futuristic city.
Commended: Jessica Parry, for her two pieces of coloured pencil fan art. They are both cute and well drawn, although we suspect she had an example close by.

Over 16:
WINNER – Louise Eckersall for her lovely mermaid. We were impressed by the detail on her fishtail, the cool water effect and the soft colours. Well done.
Commended: Sarah Goldingay, for her intriguing portrait. We loved the vibraint colours and the use of the character’s written thoughts as part of the composition.

ARTISTS ALLEY:
Under 16:
WINNER – Levi Thompson for a very accomplished pencil piece. We liked the contrast of dark, shaded areas against white linedrawings, and the combination of human, animal and combined characters.
Commended: Lorna Cowles for her Tetris fan art. The judges generally preferred original work over fan art, but we decided this didn’t really count. We loved the idea behind this piece and the cheeky expression of the character.

16 and over:
WINNER – Charlotte Mattey, who drew herself and her friends in their costumes. We felt you did a good job on the colouring and details, and loved it for its atmosphere of playful fun.
Commended: Emily McGorman for a scaly martial artist. We loved the solid pose, the clothes and the shading. A very good marker piece.

AWESOME MENTION:
There were many other excellent pieces, and judging was a tough job. To ease the pain, we chose three more pieces we thought deserved special mention for being AWESOME.
Kaitlin Tudor who drew this happy collection of animals. We really loved the colours you chose, and were impressed with the variety of styles you used. Keep drawing!
Martin Jones gave us this funky origami frog, which we thought was skilfully folded and unusual.
One of the judges wanted to disqualify this piece by Rosalyn Halford for nudity, but then another wanted to nominate it for the same reason. One way or the other, we all had a strong reaction to it, and we commend it for its cuteness and cheek.

The good people at Letraset will send the prizes to the winners of each category, Dan Hadley, Louise Eckersall, Levi Thompson and Charlotte Mattey, soon. Well done and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. We hope you had fun, and if you didn’t win, please try again!
