rahIf you’ve been around on the convention and Expo scene, you’ll probably know about Genki Gear, but I felt like giving them a shout-out because they’re doing cool things.

Genki Gear are a T-shirt company selling shirts that are not so much about the “clever” slogans, but more about quirky, funny and J-culture inspired images. I have a few of their shirts and love them, they’re high quality and comfy.

In May they came out with “Rah!”, which I think is absolutely must-have awesome. I just learned it’s by Jess Bradley, so that explains everything then.

The “Rah!” design is also available on the back of some very funky jackets, and that’s the version I have. It’s one of my favourite pieces of clothing, even though it makes people go “RAH!” when they’re standing behind me and that freaks me out. Especially if I don’t remember I’m wearing the jacket.

planktonI also love the Genki Doodle range, they are one-colour prints that make no sense. It’s the sort of joke that you kind of don’t get, but it’s OK that you don’t get it because there’s nothing to get it’s just funny. Sort of like a koan on a shirt. Maybe.

Anyway, Genki Gear. They rock. Buy their stuff. And no, this was not a paid-for post, I just really like what they do. By the way, you can also buy their shirts on Play, if you shop there.

Their own online shop: Genki Gear.

I think I mentioned Asia before, and said she’d been banned from the internet, because she didn’t have a website at the time. I am happy to find this morning that her new website is open, and looking sweet!

Asia Alfasi first came to my attention through her entry for Manga Jiman 2007. She’s been in various anthologies, including Best New Manga 1 and 3, and is working on some graphic novels. (As you do. O_o Srsly guys, ask her how to break into the industry, what do I know?)

Her work comes highly recommended, she has a lovely loose, unique style and a great sense of storytelling. You can read some of her work on the website, which you should visit right now! Right here: Asia Alfasi.

You’ll see that she has yet to choose a “kickass strapline”, so I hereby call a competition to come up with a strapline for this fine lady illustrator. Entries in the comments please, winner gets to be awesome. :3

steampunkEtsy is one of those places I almost wish I hadn’t found; because there is so much awesome stuff it makes me want to spend all my money.

I thought I’d feature some of the great steampunk pieces I came across after hiding my debit card. The artisans behind these pendants and pins combine things that are old and/or mechanical with ‘lite crafting skills and aesthetics to create some of the most need-worthy jewellery I’ve seen in a long time.

Fringelore does stuff with antique watches and other cogs and gears. I love this tiny little pin, it pokes my squee, it’s tiny and my ahr-ar machinez buttons at the same time. Tiny Cogs Pin (1.)

BirdsNBeez has lots of elegant little pendants made of shiny rocks, tiny birds and old watches. This is an antique radio tube. It may not actually produce a miniature death-ray, but I still say it’s worth the price. Miniature Death Ray Pendant (2.)

COGnitivecreations seems to charge a little more than others, but she has some very interesting designs, like this deceptively simple little dangle. She’s also into pirates. Nuff said. Time Traveller Pendant (3.)

And, OK, I’m not sure this is jewellery exactly, and I’m also not sure I could spend that kind of money even if I DO find my bank card again, but look at that. Oh, and they got loads more. *envy* Tinted Glass Goggles (vintage) (4.)

And this, my friends, is part of the reason why the internet is awesome. You don’t get this stuff in shops! Honestly, I’m not sure how our species survived for so long without the web.

The Clarence Principle film

The Clarence Principle is a spooky graphic novel about a young man who dies and his misadventures afterwards. It was written by Fehed Said, who also wrote The Old Man, one of the stories in Leek and Sushi’s Manga Show, which gives me a good reason to talk about him. That he is secretly made [...]

New Collective: Sinister Squid

Sinister Squid is, as the title suggests, a new collective, in that they’ve just got their website sorted. They are gathering articles, discussion and resources for comicking on the web or on paper. There’s no shortage on the web of web comic collectives, but they caught my eye by… well… just looking friggin good, really. [...]
