Super Jax

Drawing machine Karen Yumi Lusted (Kairi-Moon on Deviant Art) returns this year with a new graphic novel: Super Jax.

003-jackie-splashJackie is an ordinary girl who loves superheroes and ice cream. She’s always ready to help people — whether they want to be helped or not — and she can’t believe her luck when one day, she acquires some temporary super powers of her own.

Being an instant hero isn’t so simple though, especially if you don’t know the extent of your own powers. And having a sarcastic agent ordering you around doesn’t help!

Super Jax is a lovely, light-heared story about heroes and villains. It is laugh-out-loud funny and brilliantly drawn in Karen’s crisp, flowing manga style.

In the back you’ll find a bonus story, Storm Rose; also by Karen Yumi Lusted and in keeping with the heroic theme.

If you enjoyed Karen’s stories in Leek & Sushi, or you’d like a fresh and funny take on the flying heroes genre, don’t miss this book.

Superjax is a fun comic combining manga influenced visuals and storytelling with a fun take on the more typically western superhero genre. The art is pretty much everything you’d expect from Karen Lusted, it’s clean, confident and has a bright, breezy feel that flows effortlessly. The characters are well-defined, and the book manages to tell a dynamic and suspenseful story without taking itself too seriously.

While not being a groundbreaking work or with any deep philosophical message or surprising twists, Superjax is rather an example of a simple concept very well executed. The pacing and storytelling are clear, the art shows a good degree of technical skill and consistency and the humour is genuinely funny. Well worth a read.

This was a good read – quick and easy, with a fun, fast-paced story. Karen’s art is lovely as always, and draws the reader on through the pages. I do feel a little disappointed that there won’t be more – I liked the setting and there was definitely a hook at the end ;)

Hey, just got the comic today and i think you’re an awesome artist and its a real fun light hearted story, but I was just wondering. There is a really weird page in my copy. Its the page where Jackie gets angry and her power starts to spark up. Theirs a page stuck on top of another page, the one on top seems to be all right but the one below is the same image scaled very large so it doesn’t fit onto the page. also the page on top is only glued down on one side so it keeps flapping open. I’m real sorry if I’m telling this to the wrong person but I just thought I should tell someone.
Anyway, great story and I really enjoyed reading it. Good luck with all future work too.

Hi Haydon,

Thanks for your message. It’s true, there was a misprint in the book (one of the pages was enlarged through a mysterious computer fluke) so we fixed in a corrected page. I hope it doesn’t interfere with your reading experience too much.
